Tappet Adjustment

Fed up of excessive engine noise?
Does the bike's performance seems hampered
even after checking air filter, tuning and sparkplug?
You may need to adjust the tappets. Loose tappets cause the engine noise and too tight tappets hamper the performance. This article simply shows the step-by-step detailed procedure to adjust the tappets of a single cylinder motorcycle in the form of pictures.

Note: The nut/bolt/spanner/feeler sizes mentioned are of RTR180. Your bike may have different sizes.

Please get the exhaust and inlet valve clearances of your bike from the service manuals and use the recommended value feeler gauge strips. For example, for Apache RTR series, its 0.06mm for inlet and 0.08mm for exhaust.

P.S. We thank Mr. Srinivas Prasad (a.k.a. Srini Razortribe) for making available the detailed pictures.

  1. Awesome Man!!!...All owners of bikes in india need to have this knowledge on a priority basis. We all know that majority of the service centre guys in india are morons who are scarily illiterate or lazy when it comes to servicing our prized possessions.GOOD JOB!

  10. Hi there. I cannot find service manual or any information about specific tappet clearance for my 2014 rtr 150. Is it different from rtr 160 or rtr 180?

Thank you for your guide though, very specific and self explanatory. Good job!
